Five landscapes by Anton Mauve and Paul Gabriël, painted in Holland in the 1870s and 80s — amber and olive, low light, a great deal of sky. Chosen to hang together and sized to fill a wall properly. We made every decision except the one that counts.

The set measures 45½ × 33 in as hung — a little under four feet across, with four inches between frames. The hanging guide has the exact spacing, the height to hang it at, and the order to put them up in. Measured once by us instead of five times by you.

What's already decided
Choosing five that hang together is most of the work and none of the fun. These are all Hague School, painted within the same two decades, so the light behaves the same way in all five — amber and olive, low sun, a great deal of sky. They were picked against each other rather than one at a time, and two of the five were swapped out late because they didn't sit right beside the others.
The sizes were chosen against each other too, so the five hang as one wall rather than as five pictures that happen to share it. The spacing was worked out on an actual wall with a folding rule, not estimated from a picture.
